I have to share this experience. I saw a thread in another homeschool group I’m in about a strong disdain for poetry. I wondered, “Oh no, someone tortured them with some preconceived ideas about poetry!” 😩
Is this also your shared sentiment?
Did you know poetry is extremely useful for improving reading fluency?
I must say: poetry has greatly influenced my kids’ reading ability. Did you know poetry is extremely useful for improving reading fluency?
Here’s what I do:
1. I use poems as read-alouds.
2. Starting with simple poems (or songs) that are easy to read has worked best.
3. I always print the words and also project them on our TV.
4. First, I read the words to our kids as they listen and I track with a pointer.
5. Next, we read together as I set a steady pace for them.
6. I send them off to practice independently.
7. We come together and read aloud again.
8. I point out how to chunk the words, read with intonation and expression, and keep a comfortable pace.
9. Then, they read the poem aloud independently.
10. We rinse and repeat for at least three days. We revisit that poem after two weeks and I note the difference it’s made.
How do you and your kids feel about poetry? Let me know.
